In 2018, Gonoshasthaya Kendra (GK) and Gono Bishwabidyalay (GB) of Bangladesh organized Bangladesh’s first-ever Public Health Photo Contest (PHPC2018) with the theme “Explore public health and your hidden talent in photography!” It culminated in an award ceremony and exhibition on July 15, 2018, at the People’s Health Assembly (PHA) auditorium of GK. The jury panel consisted of acclaimed photographers, physicians, public health activists, and professors, and ten winning photos and ten runner-up photos were chosen.
A photo book compiling all the winning and runner-up photos was published as Public Health: Through the Lens (ISBN: 978-984-34-4860-6), with the foreword by Professor Marie Diener-West, chair of the MPH program at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, in the USA. It was officially launched at the 4th International People’s Health Assembly held at Savar in Dhaka, Bangladesh on November 15-19, 2018. The photo book included praise from renowned public health professionals from Bangladesh and abroad; and shared with medical and public health institutions worldwide. A poster documenting the photo contest was also presented in various national and international events and conferences.
Using the power of photography as a potential advocacy tool, we hope that the Public Health Photo Contest will serve as a call to action that will promote public health awareness, equitable policies, and effective interventions in Bangladesh and the rest of the world!
PHPC2018 was a tremendous success in generating public interest and raising awareness on public health both in Bangladesh and abroad. Realizing the synergism of interests in public health and visual arts like photography, Gonoshasthaya Kendra wants to take this endeavor to a much larger scale in partnership with local, national, and international organizations alike.
Details on PHPC2019 is coming soon. Stay tuned!
